Be guided by a local expert on this full-day tour, beginning in the magnificent papal stronghold of Avignon. Visit the Clock Square before entering the huge Palais des Papes, where seven exiled popes lived between 1309 and 1377, and where the main rooms are decorated with some very fine 14th-century frescoes. After a leisurely lunch (payable locally), continue to Gordes, recognised as one of the most beautiful villages in France thanks to its charm, architecture, and dramatic position above the Vaucluse plateau. You may wish to wander through the village’s narrow, winding streets, which brim with history. Also visit the beautiful 12th-century Romanesque Abbaye de Sénanque, still home to Cistercian monks, who continue to produce traditional honey, lavender essence, and liqueurs.
