Where in the world

Crete

Take the first boat of the morning from Plaka, to cross to the island of Spinalonga. This local fishing boat ferries you and the island’s guards over a narrow straight to the remains of the Venetian fortress, built in 1579 to defend the city of Elounda. Spinalonga was also a leper colony from 1903 right up until 1957.  You can wander along the ruined streets of this isolated community and picture the lives of those sent to live in this remote place. Visit the burial ground, hospital, and decontamination area and listen to stories of the remarkable people who created a life here. Back on the mainland, stroll through the picturesque streets of Plaka, filled with flowers, tavernas, and shops selling handmade wares.
