About Cortona & Arezzo
Sitting sentinel at the peak of a large hill, the atmospheric city of Arezzo lies at the crossroads of four valleys. One of the wealthiest cities in Tuscany, Arezzo’s far-reaching heritage finds its origins in gold-smithery. Despite losing some of its unique architecture during the bombing raids of the Second World War, it hasn’t lost its atmosphere of well-heeled, ancient charm. And the main square at the heart of Arezzo is still considered one of the most beautiful in Italy.
Those with an interest in early Renaissance art should definitely head to the vaulted ceilings of Arezzo Cathedral and the grand dome of Basilica di San Francesco. Both buildings are remarkably well preserved and contain vibrant frescoes by the renowned 15th century painter, Piero della Francesca.
A short but scenic drive through the Tuscan countryside leads to Cortona, a small town that bursts with energetic flair. Its diminutive size adds to its appeal, as this means it is easily accessible on foot. As you’ll find, there’s plenty to discover, from quaint shops selling local handicrafts, to buzzing piazzas and a good selection of museums. Grab a coffee and cake, or perhaps indulge in some fine Italian ice cream as you watch the world coasting by.
