Travel into the wine country of the Penedes region, home not only of Spain’s famous sparkling Cava, but also of many outstanding table wines. Begin with a visit to the prize-winning Jean Leon winery, founded by a local émigré who made his fortune in a restaurant in Beverley Hills, then returned to start a winery based around imported grape varieties. Then continue to the much larger, prestigious Torres winery near Villafranca del Penedes, where your visit includes a tour of the vineyards aboard a small train. Afterwards, drop down to the coast and the delightful 19th-century resort of Sitges for lunch beside the sea. After a relaxed meal (payable directly), enjoy a stroll along the Old Town up on the cliffs, and perhaps visit the Cau Ferrat museum of late 19th-century Catalan painting.
